You’ve put together your Power BI report, and everything is running smoothly with data updates in Power BI Desktop. However, when you publish the report to your workspace in the Power BI service and try editing the credentials for a data source using OAuth2 authentication, you encounter the “You need to use SSL (HTTPS) when you use OAuth 2.0 authentication” error message. Don’t worry – this article is here to guide you through resolving this issue.

How to fix
This error may depend on the browser you’re using. Generally, we always recommend using Microsoft Edge to browse the Power BI service. However, we understand that some organizations have restrictions on browsers. Let’s explore different scenarios and their solutions:
Firefox
The error in Firefox often occurs due to pop-up blocking. Disabling it can resolve OAuth2 authentication issues in the Power BI service. The location to disable pop-up blocking varies depending on your Firefox version. In the most recent version at the time of writing this article, simply open a new tab and enter the URL: about:preferences. This will open your Firefox settings. Navigate to the “Privacy & Security” section, and under “Block pop-up windows,” either disable it or add the Power BI service URL as an exception. If the error persists, we recommend using the Microsoft Edge browser.

Chrome / Microsft Edge
Typically, these browsers don’t encounter this error. However, if you come across it, the solution is to check for pop-up blocking. To do this, open a new tab and type the URL: edge://settings/ or chrome://settings/ depending on your browser. In the search field, enter the term “pop-up” to access the relevant settings. Disable pop-up blocking or add the Power BI service URL as an exception.
If the error still persists, please leave a comment, and we’ll work together to find a solution! 🙂
